Throughout the course of modern day slaver there has been many victims. Many have been lucky to survive and tell their stories. Below are stories of slaver victims conducted by Free the slaves.
Maria Suarez Was Held Against Her Will For 28 Years. At First She Was Held By Slaveholder Then She Was Imprisoned For A Crime That She Did Not Even Commit. At The Age Of 15, Suarez Was Tricked Into Slavery Just Like Many Others. She Was Abused Mentally By Her Captor Mentally, Physically, And Spiritually. Her Captor Threatened To Hurt Her Family, So She Couldn't Tell The Police Or Her Family Anything, She Always Said Everything Is Okay. Slowly Her Dreams Of Having A Better Life Faded. In A Interview With Free The Slaves She Said "My Dreams Just Were Crushed. They Never Let Me Bloom, Like A Rose. They Never Let The Rose Grow Up To Be A Rose.” Throughout Her 28 Years Of Being Held Captive She Just Hoped For Justice.

Two ladies in India, Samura and Shyamkal, were arranging for freedom but their home was burned by very angry slave owners, lucky they survived. They did not have any cloths to wear, no food or utensils, they were left with nothing. They believed that things would get better and things did. They joined local activist and began to earn money. With that money they were able to send their children's to school and learn with them. The money was also invested into future plans. The ladies are taking on local government. The are hoping for better school and better health clinics.
Miguel lived in Mexico where he worked for a very low pay. He would get paid forty-six to sixty dollar for a whole week of work. His young son had gotten cancer and needed medicine but Miguel did not have the money needed. That is when he decided to come and work in the United States. He didn't have enough money to pay for his trip so he accepted an offer to get a ride "now" and pay "later". However that led him to being enslaved in the orange groves of Florida, where he was threatened with violence. One day at the work site he meet an organization called Coalition for Immokalee Workers that asked about his work. He was later rescued and now works and gets the right pay. And his son is also healthy. Helia, full name Helia LaJeunesse, lost both of the females close to her. At the age of five she lost her mother and then later lost her grandmother. Helia lived with a neighbor, until the age of twelve, where she did all the house chores and cleaning. She was verbally and physically abuses, and wasn't allowed to go to school. Threats from other neighbors finally allowed her to go to communion classes. Later Helia got the courage to escape but was enslaved again but then eventually got married and had children's. Although, her difficulties didn't end there. One night a masked men broke into her home, she was raped and her husband was taken away from her. She couldn't support her children's and had to sent them into child slavery systems in haiti. With the help from anti-slavery group she was able to bring her children's have and start a new life.

There are many people that work in India's rock quarries area. Ramphal and his family were slaves in the rock quarries for a very long time. He need permission for anything he wanted to do. His village being to meet with other slavers across the are and wanted to demand their rights. However things didn't go as planned, violence broke out out at the meet. A slaver owner was killed and nine slaves were changed with murder, Ramphal was one of them. Other free slaves fought for the mens freedom and later won. Now Ramphal has started a new life where he can make his own decisions and has forgotten about his past. Rose and christie are two teenagers, from Cameroon. They were promised a better education in the united states but received slavery instead. For years they worked 15 hours a day without no pay. Rose was harmed physically and finally decided to escape. She called a Cameroonian man that had visited her slave owners house and was very concerned about her. She was taken in and told the guy that there was someone else that needed help to. Her friend Christy was rescued from the enslavement and the two reunited. |
